The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has taken an interesting approach to leverage BWC video for community outreach and operational transparency. More and more agencies are choosing, or are being directed, to release BWC video in a very timely manner after an officer involved shooting, in-custody death, or other critical/controversial incident. Agencies should consider doing the same with non-critical/non-controversial incidents that highlight the positive work done by its officers. Release of this video should be on a regular basis, on a commonly available platform for viewing, and have an explanation attached. IMPD has made their videos available, in an episodic format, on YouTube which is an ideal platform. They call the series "Sworn to Serve". Smaller agencies may feel they don't have the resources or expertise to produce this type of a series. I would encourage all agencies, regardless of size, to consider an approach such as IMPD's. Do your homework on the YouTube platform. It's not as hard as you may think. It doesn't have to be fancy. Once a week would suffice. As any YouTube developer will tell you.... it's all about the content not about how fancy it looks. Let the community see what your officers do. It will undoubtedly pay dividends.
